BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF BENTON HARBOR MEMBER NAMED NATIONAL UPS ROAD CODE AMBASSADOR
Clubs Partner with the UPS Foundation to Drive Change with UPS Road Code Program

June 29, 2017, BENTON HARBOR – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor is proud to announce that member Jaylen V., 17, of Benton Harbor, Michigan, has been chosen as the East Region National Ambassador for the UPS Road Code program. Jaylen is one of two Boys & Girls Clubs members nationally who received this honor. Shamar H. of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson (California) was selected as the West Region Ambassador. The teens were notified of the honor and congratulated on a phone call with Myron Gray, President of UPS Operations for UPS, and Brian Hill, Director of Teen Youth Development for Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Jaylen has been a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor since 2014 and will be a senior at Benton Harbor High School in the fall. In addition to this honor, Jaylen was a finalist for the 2016 and 2017 Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor Youth of the Year. “I need to be challenged in all facets of life, and not just the basketball court,” said Jaylen. The teen plans to attend a Michigan college or university to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Jaylen will also receive a $1,500 college scholarship. As a national UPS Road Code Ambassador, Jaylen will share with teens and parents in the community what he has learned in the UPS Road Code program and how his life has been impacted. He will also serve as an advocate within the Boys & Girls Clubs Movement to provide peer-to-peer encouragement and empowerment for teen safe driving.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor is one of 57 Boys & Girls Clubs of America organizations chosen to implement UPS Road Code, a national program to teach safe driving techniques to teens. The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS, is providing funding to the Club to implement the program.
“We are honored to work with the teens at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor, and are so proud of Jaylen being selected as the national Ambassador,” says Brian Edick, UPS Station Manager, St. Joseph, Michigan. “The UPS Road Code program is more than just a safe-driving program; it’s about empowering teens to be ambassadors for safety and encouraging them to drive change.”

UPS Road Code is largely based on the same safety training used by UPS’s own drivers, who are known for their safe driving techniques. In fact, UPS's 103,000 drivers worldwide log more than three billion miles per year with less than one accident per million miles driven. Taught by UPS employees trained as volunteer instructors, the program provides teens with four lessons of classroom-based instruction, as well as time behind the wheel of a virtual driving simulator.
