BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF BENTON HARBOR RECEIVES $2,000 GRANT FROM THE
DOLLAR GENERAL LITERACY FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT SUMMER LITERACY

Benton Harbor, MI – June 29, 2016 – This week, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor a $2,000 grant to support summer literacy. This local grant award is part of over $7.1 million in grants awarded to more than 900 schools, nonprofits and organizations across the 43 states that Dollar General serves.

As part of the Project Learn academic success strategy, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor provides a 10-week literacy program which prepares children for successful life-long learning through programming that reduces summer learning loss and increases grade-level reading proficiency. Certified literacy coaches are at the Fettig Youth Campus during the summer months and provide a minimum of two hours of instruction for each age group rotation throughout the week. Approximately 450 children between the ages of 6 and 14 are expected to participate in the program this summer.

Attaining that all important 3rd grade reading proficiency, which is a key indicator of future academic success and probability of graduating from high school, is a critical outcome for our youngest Club members,” said Brian Saxton, Chief Executive Officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Benton Harbor. “We especially appreciate the commitment Dollar General is making this summer to support the expanded literacy program. We will be able to address the specific needs of challenged readers, those making on-grade performance, and the advanced readers learning new skills, such as analytical thinking and persuasive writing.”

“Consistent with our mission of Serving Others, we are excited to provide these organizations with funding to further literacy and education across the communities we call home,” said Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s CEO. “It is always so exciting to see the true and meaningful impact the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has on both children and adults looking to improve their lives through literacy.”

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation is proud to support initiatives that help others improve their lives through literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $120 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 7.3 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.
