SPECIAL INITIATIVES

FOSTERING CREATIVE EXPRESSION THROUGH

INNOVATIVE PROGRAMS.

Outreach and special initiative programs focus on meeting young people where they are. Because the scope is broad, special programs complement our core program areas. By giving kids a voice through programs geared toward their needs and interests, young people find outlets for creative expression. From art and dance to equestrian and driving safety, these programs have something to inspire every young person.

UPS ROAD CODE

UPS Road Code is largely based on the same safety training used by UPS’s own drivers, who are known for their safe driving techniques. In fact, UPS's 103,000 drivers worldwide log more than three billion miles per year with less than one accident per million miles driven. Taught by UPS employees trained as volunteer instructors, the program provides teens with four lessons of classroom-based instruction, as well as time “behind the wheel” of a virtual driving simulator.

DANCE & DRAMA

Drama programs build self-confidence, spark creativity, and help to boost academic achievement. In addition to on-campus activities, the Club works in partnership with Children's Music Workshop each year for an annual production where Club members can express themselves—from costumes to set design. In the dance program, members learn dance techniques, study choreography, and perform at Club and community events.

In an effort to keep music education strong in our community, the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra (SMSO) has partnered with the Clubs to form the Music Makers programs. Members have the opportunity to participate in a strings program, as well as a drum line, both facilitated by SMSO members. The program’s approach to music education emphasizes intensive ensemble participation, group learning, and peer teaching.

ART PROGRAMS

Art programs at the Clubs are designed to foster creativity in young people, and give them outlets for self-expression. From drawing to photography, our arts programs have something that will inspire everyone.

ALUMNI & FRIENDS ASSOCIATIONS

The Alumni & Friends Association was formed to support and celebrate the mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs. The Alumni & Friends Association is a way for alumni to stay connected to the Club beyond their membership years. It also provides a way for those who were impacted by their membership to give back.

Through the Speakers Bureau group, young people have the opportunity to share their stories with Club guests during tours and community events. The group helps members build confidence, overcome fears, improve communication skills, make social connections, and inspire others.

"We are honored to work with the teens at the Club. The UPS Road Code program is more than just a safe-driving program; it’s about empowering teens to be ambassadors for safety and encouraging them to drive change."
